Amber Jewelry Care
There are several things you can do to keep your amber jewelry looking shiny and new. Here are some tips:
- When cleaning your pieces, be sure to use a soft cloth. The reason is that amber is a very soft gem and requires delicate care. What works best are the shammys used for cleaning lenses in glasses, but you can also use soft cotton or flannel. This works great for the amber itself and the sterling silver. If your pieces have intricate sterling silver settings you can also use warm water and a soft bristled brush for the places that are difficult to reach with a cloth. You should only use the brush to polish the silver but not the amber itself.
- To help maintain a smooth surface and shine, do not use household cleaners and avoid exposing your amber jewelry to any extreme heat or chemicals. This includes hairsprays, perfumes and various jewelry cleaning chemicals. Amber jewelry makers advise that you can also use very small amounts of olive oil to polish the surface.
- To keep your new jewelry looking as fresh as possible, store someplace dark and preferably wrapped in a soft cloth away from anything that might scratch the surface of the amber. Amber will darken with age due to oxidation but you can help reduce any discoloration or damage by storing it away from sunlight and fluorescent lights.
